GreenSchool Science Education Intern, New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one of NYC’s premier cultural institutions, seeks a candidate to join their Membership Department as a Membership Coordinator.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Children’s Education Department at The New York Botanical Garden is seeking a Science Education Intern for the GreenSchool during the 2013-2014 school year. GreenSchool offers plant science workshops and tours incorporating inquiry-based field investigations throughout the Garden with the goal of enhancing children’s understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The Intern will lead school group programs for grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as help manage the daily operations of the institutional space and staffing needs as well as research and develop curricula. Key duties include:

  • Lead inquiry-based plant science workshops and tours for Kindergarten through 8th grade school groups (all ability levels, including children with learning differences).
  • Teach in both an informal Garden setting and formal classroom setting.
  • Facilitate the set-up of classrooms and supplies each morning, followed by the clean-up, inventory and preparation of class materials each afternoon.
  • Assist in research, development and assessment of existing and new GreenSchool curricula, as needed and as related to changing Garden exhibitions.

Requirements:

  • Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with a background and/or strong interest in museum education; Strong science (ecology, botany, or horticulture) background preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and to be extremely flexible in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience with and enthusiasm for working with school children; Must love plants.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Publisher a plus.
